Empowering Accessibility: Transforming Pobal.ie for an Inclusive Digital Future
We’re working with Pobal to raise accessibility standards and lead an inclusive digital transformation, ensuring their online platform meets the needs of every user, including those with disabilities.
THE PROBLEM
Pobal’s website, Pobal.ie, scored just 17.33% in a National Disability Authority (NDA) audit, falling far below WCAG 2.2 AA standards. This highlighted significant accessibility issues, making it difficult for users with disabilities to navigate the site. Pobal sought Big Motive’s support to improve compliance and create a sustainable approach to accessibility.
OUR APPROACH
Big Motive suggested a two-phase process, beginning with a detailed accessibility audit to identify and prioritise key issues. We focused on areas such as colour contrast, keyboard navigation, screen reader compatibility, and mobile usability. Detailed recommendations included simplifying content, improving visual elements, and enhancing accessibility for assistive technologies.
In phase two, now underway, we’re implementing these changes to meet WCAG 2.2 AA standards. Key improvements include resizing touch targets, embedding descriptive alt text, and ensuring consistent cross-browser functionality. This structured approach embeds accessibility into Pobal’s workflows, ensuring ongoing compliance as the site evolves.
OUTCOME
While implementation continues, significant progress has already been made. The next NDA audit is expected to reflect a substantial improvement from the baseline score. Early user feedback highlights smoother navigation and better readability, particularly for assistive technology users. This project demonstrates Pobal’s commitment to inclusivity and sets a strong foundation for sustainable digital accessibility.
